[There are major spoilers ahead for Another Simple Favor. Proceed with caution!]
I'm going to assume that if you're coming to this story, you just finished watching the absolutely ridiculous Another Simple Favor and you're wondering whether all those twists and turns actually happened, or if you hallucinated them. I'm going to hold your hand when I say this: They actually happened. Because you might have gotten whiplash from all the plot twists, let's walk through all of them together.
We've got a lot to go over, so let's get into it. Let's start with...
Dante was gay! And that's why Emily was marrying him in the first place.
In a masterful piece of exposition where Blake Lively literally explains the entire movie, we find out that Dante was gay. He and Emily met in Rome years ago. She was the only person who knew he was in love with Matteo. When he found out she was in jail, he paid for her defense/appeal because he realized she was the only person he could marry who would allow him to keep his relationship with Matteo. But then, he was murdered by...
The third sister! Who has been alive the entire time, and...
Is in love with Emily? Emily reveals that she has actually been stuck in her hotel room since the night in the pool. Aunt Linda tried to blackmail her and Dante as a way out of her con-woman life. She wanted $20 million, and she had leverage because she knew Dante was gay. Emily told her there was no way, obviously.
But then, Charity took matters into her own hands because, after being deprived of her sisters for so many years, she's clearly unwell. She druged Emily and explained that she was the one who killed Sean and she was also going to kill Dante. She then went on to molest Emily, which was deeply unsettling! Charity went through with the wedding herself. And she was also the one who killed the FBI agent. Got all that? That brings us to the final piece of action in the movie.
Charity has taken Emily's son hostage.
Or, Aunt Linda has taken him hostage. And in a heated confrontation on top of a cliff, Stephanie tries to explain to Linda that she's running out of options. Charity has murdered an FBI agent. Dante is also dead, so she can't blackmail him anymore.
But wait! Aunt Linda explains that technically speaking, Charity married Dante, so she they can still get the money through Charity's impersonation of Emily. All they have to do is kill Emily so there's no proof that Charity isn't the real Emily. Charity, however, has a major problem with this. She's just been reconnected with her sister. She can't possibly lose her now! Aunt Linda's plan is very quickly unraveling. (This is what you hire Allison Janney for, fwiw.)
Nicky saves the day!
When it seems like all hope is lost, Nicky drives his drone right into Aunt Linda's head, forcing her to drop the gun. Then Charity kills Aunt Linda, shooting her and also shoving her off the cliff. Crazy!!
But Charity is still set on killing Stephanie. Thankfully, Emily distracts her with a kiss to get the gun away. And Emily somehow convinces Charity that the biggest way to earn her love is to turn herself in for the crimes she committed, but in Emily's name. So "Emily" is back in prison, but it's actually Charity. And Emily herself is still on the run. Stephanie returns to the U.S. to raise the boys by herself.
Another simple favor?
In a clear set-up for what could be a third movie, Dante's mother finds Emily in Rome and says she'll keep her secret in exchange, of course, for a simple favor. Can't wait to see what this will be!!
